TRAILER MANUFACTURER LICENSE If you want to be a bona fide manufacturer of trailers to be used on public roadways behind any kind of vehicle (semi truck, pickup, car, motorcycle, etc.) or any size of vehicle, for any purpose (hauling cargo, carrying equipment, recreational vehicles, camper trailers, etc.), or to carry any kind of cargo (livestock, boats, tanker trailer, van body, flat bed, low boy, etc.), then you will need to get registered with the U.S. government. This will get you passed the headaches and hassles of the state DMV's homemade trailer -- a.k.a. "special construction" trailer -- process and inspections, etc. This special construction process for vehicles is rapidly being diminished state-by-state by lobbying groups for the big manufacturers. This US licensing process is a pretty challenging little paper chase and you will get very little or no help from the government.
